Human milk proteins provide term and preterm infants with both nutrition and protection. The objective of the present study was to examine longitudinal changes in the protein composition of term and preterm milk during the first 2 months of lactation, focusing on protein phosphorylation and glycosylation. Using gel electrophoresis, the relative concentration and glycosylation status of lactoferrin, secretory Ig A, β-casein, α-lactalbumin, serum albumin, bile salt-stimulated lipase, xanthine oxidoreductase, tenascin and macrophage mannose receptor 1 were measured in milk collected on days 7, 10, 14, 18, 21, 28 and 60 postpartum from preterm mothers (28–32 weeks gestation, n 17). The phosphorylation status of β-casein was also investigated. To determine if these variables differ in term and preterm milk, samples from term mothers (38–41 weeks gestation, n 8) collected on days 7, 14 and 30 of lactation were also analysed. The concentration of the abundant milk proteins decreased during lactation in term and preterm milk (P <0·05). No difference in protein glycosylation was observed, except for the glycoproteins serum albumin and tenascin. The phosphorylation of β-casein varied significantly between term and preterm milk. Further investigation is required to determine whether these modifications affect protein function and are clinically important to preterm infants.

Traps baited with the sex pheromone of the bertha army worm moth, Mamestra configurata (Walker), were operated at 36 sites across the prairie provinces in 1976 and 1977. They captured ca. 15 times as many bertha moths as did light traps and were considered to constitute a useful method for detection of adults of this species.

We address the issue of decreasing band-gap with increasing atomic number, inherent in semiconducting materials, by introducing a concept we call dimensional reduction. The concept leads to semiconductor compounds containing high atomic number elements and simultaneously exhibiting a large band gap and high mass density suggesting that dimensional reduction can be successfully employed in developing new γ-ray detecting materials. As an example we discuss the compound Cs2Hg6S7 that exhibits a band-gap of 1.65eV and mobility-lifetime products comparable to those of optimized Cd0.9Zn0.1Te.

This article balances current understandings of the political landscape of Postclassic Mesoamerica through a conjunctive analysis of the archaeology and ethnohistory of the Mixtec Empire of Tututepec in the lower Río Verde region of Oaxaca. Tututepec has long been known from ethnohistoric sources as a powerful Late Postclassic imperial center. Until recently, however, little has been known of the archaeology of the site. We discuss the founding, extent, chronology, and aspects of the internal organization and external relations of Tututepec based on the results of a regional survey, excavations, and a reanalysis of ethnohistoric documents. Tututepec was founded early in the Late Postclassic period when the region was vulnerable to conquest due to political fragmentation and unrest. Indigenous historical data from three Mixtec codices narrate the founding of Tututepec as part of the heroic history of Lord 8 Deer “Jaguar Claw.” According to these texts, Lord 8 Deer founded Tututepec through a creative combination of traditional Mixtec foundation rites and a strategic alliance with a highland group linked to the Tolteca-Chichimeca. Archaeological and ethnohistoric evidence indicate that Tututepec continued to expand through the Late Postclassic, growing to 21.85 km2, and at its peak was the capital of an empire extending over 25,000 km2.

Summary
INTRODUCTION
Wheat is one of the three most important crops in the world, together with maize and rice. Approximately 600 million tonnes are harvested annually with cultivation extending over a vast geographical area, from Scandinavia to Argentina, including higher elevations in the tropics. Although the ability to give high yields under a range of conditions has contributed to the success of wheat, the most important factor has been the unique properties of wheat dough which allow it to be processed into a range of foodstuffs, notably bread, other baked products, and pastas. These properties are usually described as viscoelasticity, with the balance between the extensibility and elasticity determining the end use quality. For example, highly elastic (‘strong’) doughs are required for breadmaking, but more extensible doughs for making cakes and biscuits.
The viscoelastic properties of dough are determined by the grain proteins, and in particular by the storage proteins which form a network in the dough called gluten (Schofield, 1994). Consequently, the gluten proteins have been widely studied over a period exceeding 250 years to determine their structures and properties and to provide a basis for manipulating and improving end use quality (Shewry et al., 1995).
THE ORIGIN OF THE WHEAT GLUTEN NETWORK
Gluten can be readily prepared by gently washing dough under a stream of running water. This removes the bulk of the soluble and particulate matter to leave a proteinaceous mass which retains its cohesiveness on stretching [Figure 14.1(A)].

The distributions of forest and deforestation throughout the tropics are poorly known despite their importance to regional biodiversity and global climate and biodiversity. Deforestation estimates based on surveys or sampling have large errors, and high-resolution, wall-to-wall mapping of tropical forests is necessary to assess the impacts of fragmentation. Landsat satellite images from the mid-1980s and early 1990s were thus used to map closed-canopy tropical forest extent and anthropogenic deforestation in an approximately 700 000 km2 area of Amazonian Bolivia with precipitation >1000 mm yr−1. Total potential forest cover extent, including tropical deciduous forest, was 448 700 km2, while the area of natural non-forest formations was 245 100 km2. The area deforested was 15 500 km2 in the mid-1980s and 24 700 km2 by the early 1990s. The rate of tropical deforestation in the forest zone of Bolivia with >1000 mm yr−1 precipitation below 1500 m elevation and north of 19° S, was 1529 km2 yr−1 from 1985–1986 to 1992–1994. Our estimates of deforestation are significantly lower than those reported by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). We document a spatially-concentrated ‘deforestation zone’ in Santa Cruz where >60% of the Bolivian deforestation has occurred. These results indicate that the rate of deforestation in Bolivia has been rapid despite a relatively small human population, and, as in Brazil, clearance has concentrated in the more deciduous forests.

Colostrum and milk were collected from ten sows at frequent intervals from before farrowing until 9 d after farrowing. Ionized calcium, pH, and total concentrations of citrate, calcium, phosphate and magnesium were measured in whole milk. The diffusible fraction of the mammary secretion was separated by ultrafiltration and was used for the measurement of diffusible citrate, calcium, phosphate and magnesium. The pH before farrowing was 5·7, and increased to 6·5 on day 4 as total calcium and phosphate also increased. Before farrowing, total and diffusible citrate were 7·8 and 7·3 mM respectively, while diffusible phosphate was 11·9 mM, and these concentrations all decreased during the study period. Total magnesium ranged between 3·3 and 4·1 mM, while diffusible magnesium ranged between 2·0 and 3·1 mM. While these concentrations and patterns of change of diffusible calcium and citrate are quite different from those of women's milk during the first week after birth, theoretical physicochemical relationships between diffusible calcium and citrate, and ionized calcium and HPO42− were corroborated by these results. We conclude that diffusible citrate plays an important role in the determination of the concentration of diffusible calcium. However, while citrate may be the major determinant of the total concentration of calcium in women's milk, this is not the case in sows' milk.

Recently there has been much interest in reacting vanadium oxides hydrothermally with cationic surfactants to form novel layered compounds. A series of new transition metal oxides, however, has also been formed at or near room temperature in open containers. Synthesis, characterization, and proposed mechanisms of formation are the focus of this work. Low temperature reactions of vanadium pentoxide and ammonium (DTA) transition metal oxides with long chain amine surfactants, such as dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide yielded interesting new products many of which are layered phases. DTA4H2V10O28•8H2O, a layered highly crystalline phase, is the first such phase for which a single crystal X-ray structure has been determined. The unit cell for this material was found to be triclinic with space group P 1 and dimensions a=9.895(1)Å, b=11.596(1)Å, c=21.924(1)Å, α=95.153(2)°, β=93.778(1)°, and γ= 101.360(1)°. Additionally, we synthesized a dichromate phase and a manganese chloride layered phase, with interlayer spacings of 26.8Å, and 28.7Å respectively. The structure, composition, and synthesis of the vanadium compound are described, as well as the synthesis and preliminary characterization of the new chromium and manganese materials.

The onset of copious milk secretion (lactogenesis II) in women occurs between 1 and 3 d after birth, and during this period the composition of breast milk changes. During the first 5 d of lactation we measured the concentrations of total, diffusible and ionized Ca (Catot, Cad, Ca2+), diffusible phosphate (Pid), diffusible citrate (Citd) and lactose in the breast milk. On day 1 after birth the concentrations (mean ± SEM) were Catot, 5·71±0·30 mM; Cad, 2·66±0·19 mM; Ca2+, 2·90 ±0·18 mM; Pid, 0·26±0·16 mM; Citd, 0·25±0·03 mai and lactose, 76±11 mM. Between day 1 and day 4 the concentration of Catot increased 1·7-fold to 9·56 ±0·39 mai, Cad increased 1·8-fold to 4·75±0·26 mM, Ca2+ decreased by 20% to 2·33 ± 0·13 mM, Pid increased 6·6-fold to 1·69±0·11 mM, Citd increased 20-fold to 5·06±0·21 mM, and lactose increased 2·3-fold to 173±4 mM. A high correlation has been found between [Cad] and [Citd] in the milk of both ruminant and non-ruminant species, which show a wide range in concentrations of [Cad] and [Citd], and the data fit a simple physicochemical model of ion equilibria in the aqueous phase of milk. The results of the present study confirm the relationship between [Cad] and [Citd] in human milk, even during lactogenesis II when the composition of the milk is changing very rapidly.

Changes in the concentrations of glucose and galactose were measured in the peripheral blood of ten piglets after they had ingested milk during a natural sucking. In addition, the mild stress associated with the experimental procedure was determined by sampling nine fasted piglets over a period of 9 to 12 min. During this period there was a significant increase in the concentration of glucose in the blood of the piglets but no change in the concentration of galactose. After milk ingestion during a natural sucking the concentrations of both glucose and galactose increased from 5·7 mM and 19 μM to reach peak values of 7·7 mM and 122 μM, respectively, by 30 to 35 min. The concentrations of glucose and galactose returned to initial values in 60–80 min and 80–100 min, respectively, after sucking. Since the change in the concentration of galactose in the peripheral blood was much lower than the change in the concentration of glucose, we conclude that galactose was rapidly removed by the livers of sucking piglets. However, after the ingestion of milk the percentage increase (from initial to peak values) in the concentration of galactose in the blood was much larger (650%) than the increase in the concentration of glucose (43%). Thus, we propose that the determination of galactose in the peripheral blood may provide a qualitative method for monitoring the digestion and absorption of milk lactose in sucking piglets.

Concentrations of lactose, α-lactalbumin (α-la), glucose and glucose-6-phosphate were measured in milk obtained from rats under conditions where the rates of milk production varied from 0 to 2·6 g/h. In the milk from rats fed a low protein diet where milk production was 0·9 g/h, the concentration of α-la was 1·5 mg/ml, being significantly lower than that in the milk of control rats at 2·9 mg/ml and where the rate of milk production was 2·6 g/h. No differences were detected in the glucose concentrations. When rats were fed restricted amounts of the control diet and where milk production varied from 0 to 1·7 g/h during the course of the day, no differences in the concentrations of either α-la or glucose were detected. These results suggest that considerable caution must be used in interpreting the significance of milk glucose in the rat.
